San Juan River is a magical and enigmatic place in America. Its history, its border situation and its impressive environment make it an attractive place to visit.

Rutas Escondidas has created the San Juan River’s route with special interest in San Carlos, the Solentiname Archipelago, Los Guatusos Reserve, Papaturro River and the knowledge of the local population. Also, for the people who have more time, we will get to know the Castle and Bartola River.

San Carlos is the starting point. On the way, at 45 minutes from San Carlos we will visit a diverse place where we could talk with Don Teofilo, who is a local producer. He will show us the place and help us to understand the problems of the production, the problem of the price changes in the international markets and the also the problem of the integration in the local market.

Solentiname, according to Centeno sisters, means “place with lots of guests”. It is an archipelago with 36 islands.

Our trip begins in San Carlos, and we will stop in San Fernando in order to visit and talk with the painters. We will make another stop on Zapote Island, also called Bird’s island because there, every year nest migratory birds. They are the only population in the island.

Then we will arrive to Mancarron Island. There are some activities which help to improve the life in the island such as craftwork, painting and fishing.

Through Papaturro River we will arrive to The Guatusos which is a unique place Central America and it was the first wetland in Nicaragua with the category “Ramsar”. It is 430 square kilometres where we could find lakes, wetlands, and dry and wet forests.

We also will visit cocoa products cooperative.

Our trip could be longer until we arrive to El Castillo which is a colourful, tiny and small village. It has la Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepcion.
