ESPANICA. Nicaragua’s coffee

ESPANICA is an alternative economy project; it was created by a small organization in Madrid in the 80’s in the 20th century. The Ruben Dario-Campo Ciudad Association of friendship between Spain and Nicaragua, which nowadays goes by the name of Rubén Darío- Campo Ciudad Foundation (FRD-CC); has a duty to let producer cooperatives be able to sell their products in the European Union in a direct way.

The FRD-CC has developed, since its creation, cooperation projects which are focus in Nicaraguan rural agricultural production. Taking historical references of cooperatives and communities. In Nicaragua, there was created a new strategic project of production and economy management, the POPULAR ECONOMY, which their principles are based on:  self- management of the productions ways, association between producers and move forward change and commercialization of the products.
  
For that, the FRD-CC rises the creation of a retail society of Nicaraguan products which are involved the own cooperatives (50%). In that way, through the participation of the capital of this society the selling ways are also involved with the producers.
 
The goal is not only selling the products of small producers, it is also focus on creating an awareness to the north consumers and create a direct selling way, which are open to every kind of solidarity collectives that want to support the project.

Since 1997, when the first coffee container arrived, has created a network with more than 800 consumer groups which are found around NICARAGUAN’S COFFEE. From 2003, ESPANICA has turned into non-profit Cooperative, which works with the small members producers.
